Cadence Tools Information

The University of New Orleans is a Member of the Cadence® University Software Program

This page contains information about the Cadence design tools used in classes and research programs in the Department of Electrical Engineering at UNO. Students obtain practical experience in advanced electronics design using state-of-the-art CAD tools, computing and laboratory facilities, and access to the design library for prototyping of integrated circuits.

Research Projects Using Cadence Software

  • Very Large Scale Integration (VLSI) Lab has the following projects using Cadence design tools:
    • The development and implementation of VLSI algorithms for digital signal processing.
    • Applications of these algorithms to wireless communication, sensor networks, and image processing.
    • Incorporation of the FPGA-based computational engine to CMOS image sensor circuits.
  • Configurable Computing Research Group (CCRG) has the following ongoing research projects using Cadence design tools:
    • Development of VLSI circuits for multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless communication.
    • Design and VLSI prototyping of high-speed digital testing and verification techniques for mixed-signal device.
    • An integrated circuit for cross-layer design of integrated wireless sensor networks platform.

Classes Using Cadence Tools

  • ENEE 4545 - Introduction to VLSI (Professor Xin-Ming Huang)
This course provides students with basic knowledge of various aspects of modern VLSI design. It includes MOS transistors, circuit design and analysis at transistor level, logic and digital sub-system design and analysis, VLSI testing and VLSI physical design (layout, floor planning, placement, and routing). Lab projects are required to use layout tools and SPICE simulation software.
  • ENEE 3547 - Digital Integrated Circuit Design (Professor Xin-Ming Huang)
This course gives a detailed treatment of the MOS transistor with all its relevant aspects; to the static and dynamic operation principles, analysis, and design of basic inverter circuit; and to structure and operation of combinational and sequential logic gates. There will be lab projects which will allow you to practice design skills using computer aided design tools. This course requires the use of Cadence/PSPICE software for circuit simulation.
